Palentine's Day Spreads Platonic Love

By Mya Oyler

Palentine's Day

With Valentine’s Day sneaking up on us yet again, Animas High School Student Council has a plan to make the dreaded holiday a bit more singles-friendly with Palentine’s Day.
Since we’ve left our elementary school Valentine’s parties in the dust, the pressure builds to find a mate in time for the lover’s holiday. StuCo has decided to ditch the lovey-dovey vibes, presenting AHS students with a chance to appreciate their best pals.
On the bittersweet day, everyone will receive a personalized Valentine delivered to them so no one feels the lack of love in their lives. There will also be an opportunity to write your own Palentines with provided paper and pens.
Junior StuCo representative Lindsay Levine, who spearheaded this inclusive idea, said she got her inspiration from a popular TV show. “I’m obsessed with Parks and Rec and in the show they have Galentine’s Day, but I didn’t want to assign a gender to the day.”
StuCo elaborated on this idea coming up with Palentine’s Day. Levine continued, “Palentine’s Day is a way to make Valentine’s Day fun for everyone no matter if they are in a relationship or not. This also makes it inclusive to anyone that identifies as male, female, or other.
“I wanted this day to be fun for everyone. I also wanted a change of pace from school and the opportunity to spread friendship.”
This year, we’re taking the pressure and heartbreak out of Valentine’s Day and giving the student body an opportunity to celebrate friendship. Levine summed it up perfectly, “It should just be about showing appreciation for people you care about.”
